Parent Open House Survey

Parents and Guardians,

We are almost through our second full week of school.  I am over joyed to be the principal at Turkey Foot Middle School. There are so many talented and sweet kids that attend TFMS.  I want to thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to play a small part in the development of your child.

As the role of principal I want to engage with ALL stakeholders to make Turkey Foot a place where you and your students can call home.  We had a very successful open house and activities fair.  In order to improve on the traditions we have here I am requesting feedback on how you thought tonight went.

Please complete the simple google form listed below.  I look forward to your feedback so we can make this an even more positive experience for everyone in the future.

Thanks and have a great day!

Mrs. Holly Spritzky

Finishing Strong--Principal's Points

After state testing it is easy for students to start thinking that school is over.  While we have a variety of end of year activities planned (including Field Day on Wednesday the 23rd), it is important that everyone be mindful that there are 8 school days left in the year and be ready to finish strong.  Our expectations for academics and behavior are still in place and will be until June 1st.  We wish the best to our 8th graders transitioning to high school and look forward to the return of our current 6th and 7thgraders next year as the leaders of our student body.  Together, parents, teachers and students make Turkey Foot Middle School the place to be.

A message from our Superintendent on 13 Reasons Why

In the Kenton County School District, our students’ safety and security are one of our utmost priorities. Last year, we made you aware of a controversial Netflix series about suicide called 13 Reasons Why. Netflix will release the second season of the series on May 18, 2018. This series may raise different emotions, concerns, and questions for our students.

Archery Team State Results

Our TFMS archery team competed Friday at the Kentucky NASP State Tournament. Our top twelve archers scored 3254 points, our best outing ever. We placed 23rd out of 109 middle school teams. Eighth grader Duncan Cornelius was our top male archer, placing 42nd out of 1341 middle school archers. Aubrey Hopkins placed 58th out of 1162 female middle school archers. Seventh grader Trace Fry shot a perfect 50 in one round at 10-meters. Very proud of our team!

Principal's Points

They want to share what went well, what they enjoyed, what bugged them and what they learned.  The problem comes when we say, “How was school today?” and they answer “Fine”.  And return to their phones, the X-Boxes or their favorite TV show.  Sometimes we, the parent may need to make a bigger effort to get our students to start a conversation.  We may have to ask them to share specifics about the day.  I always like to start with the question “What’s something new you learned today?”  Other conversation starters that may work include, “what was the most fun you had today”, “what’s one thing you didn’t like about school today?”, “can you teach me something you learned today?”, “what kind of math problems did you do today?”, “what was the hardest thing about school today”.  Once we can get the conversations going with our children, we may be surprised how much they want to share with us.

Principal's Points

School safety.  With the recent incidents facing schools we are hearing more and more about school safety.  It is something I find myself thinking about more often not only for TFMS but for all schools in Kentucky and the nation.  I can assure you that the safety of our students and staff is my primary concern.  We have cameras, our doors are locked and require visitors to be buzzed in, we have a School Resource Officer in the front office, the faculty and staff go through safety training and we conduct regular safety drills.  However, schools can have the best safety plan and the best technology available but the support of our students and families are key to making our school truly safe.  We must continue to work to build a strong relationship between TFMS and our community.  It is imperative that students, parents and all community members feel comfortable sharing concerns about students, teachers and school safety.

Please continue the conversations we have started with our students at TFMS:

  • If they hear or see anything that seems odd or could be a possible threat to the school or our students they need to report it immediately to a parent, teacher, counselor, administrator or other adult they trust.
  • We want everyone safe in our school.
  • We take ALL matters involving the safety of our students and staff seriously.
  • Threats real or perceived are not a joke and may have serious repercussions for anyone involved whether verbal, in print or on any social media site.
  • We want everyone to be a responsible digital learner and this includes understanding the responsibility they have when they are on the Internet and using social media.
  • Stress that we are part of a family at TFMS and we need to take care of our family.

TFMS Boy's Basketball Team Wins End of Season Tournament Boy's Basketball 2018

Congratulations to the Turkey Foot Middle School Boy's Basketball team on thier exceptional season ending in a Championship trophy!

Principal's Points

Being in school all day, every day will help your student get the most out of their middle school experience. Please encourage and support good attendance for your student with some ideas:

· Schedule all doctor, dentist, orthodontist and other appointments before or after school hours. It is important that students are in school all day. Scheduling these appointments after school and not signing your student out early is key.

· There is no substitute for time in the classroom with their teacher. While make-up work is allowed there is nothing that can replace the time a student spends with his or her teacher to hear important concepts, participate in class discussion and to ask questions.

· Many doctors recommend that middle school aged students get at least 9 hours of sleep per day. Set a reasonable bed time, make sure that electronic devices are put away and that students get the sleep they need to be successful in the classroom.

Kentucky Safe Schools Anti-Bullying Week

In recognition of Kentucky Safe Schools Anti-Bullying Week, Turkey Foot Middle School will have activities and lessons everyday during October 16th-20th that concentrate on putting a stop to bullying.  Please talk to your student about bullying and what can be done to stop it.  Additionally, remind them of 2 special days:

Wednesday, October 18th     Students and staff are encouraged to wear pink shirts to join in the national "Stop bullying wear-pink" campaign.

Friday, October 20th     Students and staff are encouraged to wear white, to white-out bullying at Turkey Foot Middle School.

*We will also have students sign anti-bullying pledge links during lunch to "Link together to stop bullying."

New Opportunities At TFMS

Beginning in November, during our 2nd trimester, all students will be involved in a club or activity during the school day! Students will meet every other week for one hour to belong to a group with the same goal in mind.

Many students do not have transportation after school so can’t stay for activities and many students would like to be involved in more activities but don’t have the after school time.

This plan will address both.

Additionally, we believe that students do better in school when they are connected through activities. This addresses KCSD’s Goal Three.

We are excited about this opportunity for all students.

Principal's Points: Test Taking Tips

As we move through the school year students are assessed in a variety of ways.  Below you will find a list of Test Taking Tips that will work for all tests.

  • Do your best to be at school on testing day.  Try to schedule doctors and other appointments for after school
  • You should get plenty of rest the night before the test.
  • On the day of the test you should eat a good and nutritious breakfast.
  • Always listen closely to all directions prior to starting the test.
  • If you aren’t sure of the directions ASK the teacher for an explanation.  Sometimes they are not allowed to answer a question you have but is always good to ask!
  • Read all the questions and all answers completely- sometimes you can get tripped up because of a word or phrase.
  • Answer all questions—do not leave blanks
  • If you are not sure of an answer ELIMINATE the answers you KNOW are wrong
  • If the test requires you to read a passage and then answer questions- read the ANSWERS before the passage.  It will help you to know what the test is looking for.

Kenton County celebrates state test scores

The 2017 Kentucky State Report Card has been released, and once again, the Kenton County School District is classified as Distinguished!

The Kentucky Department of Education did not label schools based on the 2017 data as the state accountability model is transitioning to a new accountability model.  However, to honor the work and maintain continuity in the interim, the district utilized the same formula to assign designations to the schools and district.

Introducing "MyBusBuddie" parent portal

Parents and guardians are always interested in the status of the bus that transports their children.  While everything possible is done to assure that the buses operate on schedule, situations arise that can cause delays in their arrival times at a student’s stop.

The Kenton County School District desires to keep parents and guardians informed of the current status and location of their bus, and to make it as easy as possible to provide this communication without interfering with parents’ normal schedule.

Mrs. Spritzky named Turkey Foot Middle School Principal Mrs. Holly Spritzky named TFMS Principal

Dear Turkey Foot Family,

It is my pleasure to announce Mrs. Holly Spritzky as Turkey Foot Middle School’s new Principal! Mrs. Spritzky has been a dedicated Assistant Principal at Turkey Foot Middle School for the past 5 years with 22 years of educator experience.   Along with being a loyal leader in our school, she is also an active community member and parent for Turkey Foot, having had two children of her own attend Turkey Foot Middle School. The unanimous decision was based on the criteria established by the Site Base Council with significant input from staff members, parents and students. Further communication regarding a meet and greet with Mrs. Spritzky is soon to follow. We are excited for the 2018/2019 school year!
