Summer Reading Information

“Find A Book, Kentucky” for Summer Reading!

During the summer months, the challenge of keeping students reading sometimes increases. Research has shown that students who do not read consistently over the summer can lose momentum in maintaining the progress they made during the school year; this phenomenon is known as the “summer slide.”

Below is a FREE, research-based tool “Find a Book, Kentucky” to help students create a personalized reading list and then locate those books at the nearest library or bookseller.

Ready to get started?

  •        Download the two page flyer (attached to this email) to share with students and parents.
  •        Visit “Find a Book, Kentucky.”
    1.      Go to fab.lexile.com/fab/ky/.
    2.      Enter the child’s Lexile measure or grade level.
    3.      Pick books that match the reader’s interests.
    4.      View and refine the search results.
A message from our Superintendent on 13 Reasons Why

In the Kenton County School District, our students’ safety and security are one of our utmost priorities. Last year, we made you aware of a controversial Netflix series about suicide called 13 Reasons Why. Netflix will release the second season of the series on May 18, 2018. This series may raise different emotions, concerns, and questions for our students.

Glow Run

Parents! This year the PTA is helping Piner Elementary raise funds for our Summer Learning Program, open to all students going into grades 1-5, and our Me and My School program for incoming Kindergarteners. This year our theme is “The Summer of STEAM!” STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Our spring fundraiser is the Piner Glow Run! It’s a 9-day program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on Monday, March 26. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on Wednesday, April 4. With our big goal of raising $10,000 for The Summer of STEAM and Me and My School, we asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it more profitable, easier, and fun.

Students will also experience an amazing character theme, CASTLE QUEST! an English castle theme all about being brave and living with character. On their quest to regain Bravemore Castle, students will learn the “SIX VIRTUES of a TRUE HERO” from a cast of colorful characters, which ties right in with our Character Counts program.

Donations will go toward The Summer of STEAM and Me and My School summer learning programs and to the entire 9-day experience. So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run! Thank you for your support!

Summer Program Information

We are starting to plan for our Summer Learning Program for students incoming to grades 1-5.  This summer our focus is The Summer of STEAM! (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). Don’t worry-we will still do lots of reading, too.  In order to fund our program, PTA will be conducting the Piner Glow Run on April 4 during the school day. This is going to be an exciting event, and we hope to raise $10,000 to have the best summer program yet! Please see the back of this newsletter for more information.

We will also have the Me and My School program designed especially for our incoming Kindergarten students. Please be sure to register you student for this outstanding Kindergarten prep program-information was included in the Kindergarten Registration packet, or is available on our school webpage. Limited spots are available, so be sure to register as soon as possible.

Report Cards Coming Home Soon

Be on the lookout Thursday, March 8 for your child’s 2nd term report card.  Please take some time to review it with your child, noting areas of growth and improvement, and areas that still need some work.  Ask your child what he or she needs to do to make improvements-it is important for the students to have ownership in their progress.  For any concerns or questions, please contact your child’s teacher(s).

Time for Kids Drive

Did you know that informational reading is one of the most important life skills we can teach our students? Using Time for Kids magazine in our classrooms helps our students learn how to comprehend real world information and understand how to use text features like charts, graphs, captions, and headings.  We can get free Time for Kids for our whole school-here’s how!  Monday, your child wil bring home a booklet. Please complete 7 pages of information and return it on Tuesday.  Students will receive fun prizes for bringing the books back to school, and they don’t have to sell anything.  If we have a 60% return on the booklets, we will get free Time for Kids for the entire school!  This is a great way for you to help us get free educational resources for our students. Our TFK Drive will run from Monday, March 5-Friday, March 9.

Scholastic Book Fair Will Be Here Soon!

It’s time for the Book Fair! Our spring Scholastic Book Fair will be held from February 26-March 2. This year’s theme is “Paws for Books.”

A Note About Work Ethic Awards

Based upon the results of our survey, most parents prefer to have one Work Ethic event at the end of the year. Therefore, instead of having Work Ethic 3 times per year, we will celebrate at the end of the year with one awards event. The criteria will remain the same-a copy of the Work Ethic Rubric is on the back of this newsletter. We appreciate your input in making this decision!

Fundraiser Order Pickup on November 16

Fundraiser orders will be here for pick up on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. If the order is small enough to send home on the bus with your child, we will do so. However, larger orders must be picked up in the cafeteria. Parents picking up students for 21st Century can stop in for their orders, or have curbside delivery-just let the car rider supervisors know you have an order. Please be sure to get your orders that night-many of them contain food items and cookie dough, and food service regulations prohibit us from storing orders in the cafeteria refrigerators. Thank you for helping us to raise funds for more Chromebooks for student use!

Red Ribbon Week

             Red Ribbon Week: Oct. 23-27
As part of National Red Ribbon Week, which is held each year to help students learn to say “NO!” to drugs, we will have special dress up days:

  • Mon. 10/23: Be a Jean-ius-be drug free (jeans/red shirt)
  • Tues. 10/24: Sock it to Drugs (crazy socks)
  • Wed. 10/25: Put a Cap on Drugs (hat day)
  • Thurs. 10/26: Turn your Back on Drugs (wear shirt backwards)
  • Fri. 10/27: Say Boo to Drugs (dress as favorite book character)
Missing School = Missing Out

Each day, teachers plan exciting learning opportunities for students.  Many of these activities are hands-on, collaborative, or incorporate technology, which is difficult to replicate at home.  The learning that goes on in the classroom cannot be duplicated simply by completing make-up worksheets at home.  Therefore, it is our goal to have EVERY STUDENT at school on time EVERY DAY!  Too many absences, whether excused or unexcused, can have significant impacts on learning and achievement. Because we want all of our students to thrive, we offer incentives for students with perfect attendance to recognize their efforts to be in school.

  • 0 absences/tardies each month = pencil and popsicle plus students are entered into a drawing to each lunch in the Panther Den
  • 0 absences/tardies for 1/2 school year = entered into drawing for a BICYCLE!  (drawings held in Dec and May)
  • 0 absences/tardies for whole school year = gift card from the PTA!

We look forward to teaching your children every day!

2017 Fall Community Education

KPREP Test Scores

The KPREP scores for 2016-17 were released. While the state has not assigned overall performance levels to schools this year as part of the transition to a new accountability system, our district has tabulated our scores and has given us a designation based upon the previous accountability model.  I am pleased and proud to report that Piner Elementary is once again a KCSD Distinguished School of Distinction! The Piner teachers, staff, and students have worked very hard to maintain our tradition of academic excellence, while meeting each child’s individual needs.  Thank you for your excellent support from home, and for the outstanding support we receive from our community partners. It truly does take a village to raise a child!

Kenton County celebrates state test scores

The 2017 Kentucky State Report Card has been released, and once again, the Kenton County School District is classified as Distinguished!

The Kentucky Department of Education did not label schools based on the 2017 data as the state accountability model is transitioning to a new accountability model.  However, to honor the work and maintain continuity in the interim, the district utilized the same formula to assign designations to the schools and district.

What is Growth Mindset?

This year we will spend a lot of time talking to our students about how to develop a growth mindset.  Simply put, a growth mindset means that people’s brains grow and change over time, and that the more we work our brains, the stronger they get-much like a muscle. Growth mindset means that intelligence is not fixed at birth-we can all get “smarter” as we use our brains to solve problems and learn new things.  The opposite of a growth mindset is a fixed mindset.  This is a belief that we are only as smart as we will ever be at birth.  However, brain research has disproven this theory.  When brains are active and working, they create more neural connections-which makes them stronger and more able. Encourage your child not to give up easily on tasks that seem difficult. We are teaching the students not to say “I can’t do it” by adding one word-“yet.” By saying “I can’t do it yet”, students will realize that with work, they will learn to do it-and they can succeed.  Try using the Power of Yet at home and see what a difference it can make!

Change to Morning Schedule

Starting on Monday, 9/18/17, students will be able to enjoy breakfast at Piner Elementary School’s cafeteria anytime from 7:55 am to 8:45 am. Parents, please note that also starting on Monday, your child’s bus may be up to 15 minutes earlier. Please use the BusBuddie Portal to monitor the location of the bus as it follows its morning route.

Beginning Sept. 18, students allowed to enter buildings 50 minutes before start

Feedback Needed from Parents and Volunteers

As part of our district’s Future Ready Action Plan development, we are working to gain valuable feedback from various groups. Your feedback will help us make districtwide planning decisions moving forward. We are currently looking for your feedback in the area of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. We ask that you take 30 minutes to share your insight by completing the survey link below by January 31. Your feedback will be curated with the feedback from all other members of the group and consolidated into a report that provides our district with readiness levels, a gap analysis, and strategies to support our district team moving forward.

To complete the assessment, please click on the link below:

http://dashboard.futurereadyschools.org/survey/curriculum/8114/

Please complete the brief survey by January 31 so that we can compile the feedback shortly thereafter. Your feedback will be combined with that from others in the group to create a comprehensive report. No feedback is tied back to an individual user.

Your honest feedback is a key to our future planning and implementation. Thank you for your time and for supporting the students of our district as part of our planning process moving forward.

If you have any questions, please contact Ed Bonhaus at ed.bonhaus@kenton.kyschools.us.

Sincerely,

The Kenton County Future Ready Team

Transportation Changes

With the large number of activities taking place after school, it is important that we have written documentation of any transportation changes being made with your child. This includes the 21st CCLC program. Please send a dated, written note with your child’s first and last name documenting any changes to your child’s usual transportation.  Please do not put this information into the student planner. Rather, put this on a separate piece of paper to be filed in the office.   This will avoid confusion at the end of the day.  We appreciate your help with this.

Cafeteria Policy

Part of our students’ educational program is to learn about making healthy food choices. We work hard to model this with our school lunches. Our cafeteria team prepares delicious and nutritious foods every day. Our school policy is that we do not permit fast food or soft drinks to be served in our cafeteria for lunch. Please consider the nutritional and caloric value of the foods you send to school for your child’s lunch.

Transportation Changes

Please send all transportation changes in writing on a separate piece of paper, not in your child’s planner. Include the student’s first and last name, teacher, and address going to.  If the child is going home with another student, we must have a permission note from the other student’s parents. For car riders, please also list car tag #.

Compass Learning

We are excited to once again offer Compass Learning to our students!  Compass Learning is an online website that creates learning paths, in math and reading, for students that align with their MAP scores.  Students will be working on Compass at school, but we would also like for students to work on Compass at home.  Working on Compass at home will ensure further achievement for students.  Please watch for students to bring home their username and passwords.  To access the Compass website, go to the Kenton County School District webpage, choose students, and then Compass Learning.  If you have any further questions about Compass, please contact your child's teacher.

MAP Testing

We will begin MAP testing in the areas of Reading and Math on Wednesday, September 7.  The results of this test will be used to flexibly group students, target students who need interventions, identify students in fifth grade for the Prep+ program, and more. Background checks are good for three years.  If you are unable to afford this fee, the school will help as funds are available. Volunteers must also complete annual volunteer training-see the FRC newsletter for training dates.

Important Information about Treats

Due to the increased number and severity of student food allergies, we now require that all treats brought to school to share (ex: parties, birthdays) must be store bought and in their original packaging, with nutritional information attached.  Any treats that do not meet this standard will not be served. Thanks for helping to keep our students safe!

Sangha Parent Communication

Soon you will receive an email invitation to join our Piner Elementary exclusive phone app called Sangha. Sangha, which means ‘community’ in Sanskrit, will enable you to stay in the know about your child’s classroom and the school while on the go.  The school and teachers will be adding events to the Sangha calendar and sending newsletters, signup requests and messages through the Sangha mobile app at your fingertips.  No more sending a paper copy of the consent form, trying to remember when you signed up to volunteer, or searching for the teacher’s email from last month!

Your email invitation from Sangha will arrive in your inbox and include the title “Invite from Piner Elementary” asking you to register, create a password, and download the app (iOS or Android).  For security reasons, your invitation is directly tied to your email address.  Therefore, you cannot forward it to someone else.  If you’d like someone other than yourself to be included, please let us know.

Back to School Health Requirements

It’s time for parents to start thinking about health requirements for back to school! Meeting health requirements for school attendance is an important part of making sure your child is ready for school.  These requirements provide the assurance that your child is not only up-to-date on necessary immunizations, but also that he/she is healthy to attend school.  Keep your child “on track” by making sure that he/she meets the health requirements every school year.

Piner's New Parent Communication App

This new communication tool will bring our messages, calendars, events, sign-ups for parent teacher meetings, RSVP and volunteering to your fingertips.  Help us save paper and time by signing up and downloading the app when you receive the email with the heading “Sangha Mailer” with the subject saying “Piner Elementary School is inviting you to sign up for your class.”  It will only take 30 seconds! Make sure you turn on the push notification so you are able to receive the alerts.

Follow the steps in your personalized invite to ensure you sign up for the full App.  You want to ensure you log in to receive the full App and not just the generic calendar version.

If you did not receive a Sangha email invitation, this means we do not have a current email address on file for you at the school. Simply send a note to us with your email address, and we can add it to our database and send you a Sangha invitation.

21st Century Program Begins

The 21st Century program begins next Monday, September 14.  The Homework Help piece of the program is a key ingredient to help our students make and sustain academic progress.  Whether or not your child is signed up for the 21st CCLC, consider ways you can help your child succeed with homework: provide a quiet place in your home to do the work, carve out some dedicated time each day and make it a routine, and provide support by helping the students understand assignment directions.  Teachers often ask students to complete work that was started in school but was not finished in class. Therefore, most often the students should have a clear idea of the assignment expectations.  The important thing is that they try.

New School Behavior Procedures

                                                        What is PBIS?
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention System. Here at Piner we call our PBIS system “Piner Pride.” Students are specifically taught our behavior expectations for the classroom, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, buses, playground, and assemblies.  We practice these expectations frequently at the beginning of the year, and review them often throughout the year.  This approach has proven to be very successful in reducing the numbers of behavior referrals each month.  This year we are adding some new elements to our PBIS system: the classroom “Clip Up/Clip Down” charts and the student anti-bullying strategy of “Stop, Walk, Talk.”  We will no longer use “sticks” as our behavior management strategy; rather, we have moved into the use of a colored chart. Students will have the opportunity not only to move their clips down to a lower color when behavior reminders are needed, but they will also have the chance to move their clips up for rewards when they display outstanding behavior.  The “Stop, Walk, Talk” strategy teaches students proactive ways to stop bullying behaviors and to support one another in these efforts. Students who “Stand Up” to bullies on behalf of their peers will be given opportunities for positive peer recognition. Empowering our students to make good behavior choices increases the learning opportunities for everyone!

Important Note About Attendance

Please remember that your child may have up to 9 parent notes and 10 doctors’ notes before absences become unexcused. After 3 unexcused absences, we must begin the truancy procedures as outlined by the Kenton County School District. Signing your child out early or coming in tardy will use parent notes, so please consider carefully whether your child is truly ill and must miss a day of school.

Welcome New Staff Members

These are the meal prices this year: breakfast is $1.45 and lunch is $2.00. Free and reduced forms are available online on the Kenton County School District website. Please utilize this tool as this will help us process your application faster. If you have any questions, please call Piner’s cafeteria manager, Monica Trattles, at 356-2155 ext. 5014 and she can direct you to the web site.

Everyone should have received a free and reduced lunch application form in their child’s backpack. These forms are also available online. Please complete and return them as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary fees, as parents are responsible for their child’s meal purchases until they have been approved. If you have misplaced this form, please send a note to your child’s teacher, and we can send another one home.

We are thankful to be part of your child’s daily nutrition education. We appreciate knowing that we can provide them with good choices that will lead to lifelong healthy eating habits.

Thank you, and have a healthy and nutritious year! Monica Trattles, Piner Cafeteria Manager

We appreciate your cooperation and patience with us as we work through these changes.

Update to District Attendance Policy
Excused attendance events include illness, physician visits, funeral/death of immediate family, and court appearances

must meet established criteria. Parent notes are accepted for up to a maximum of nine (9) events per school year.

Additional attendance events in a school year may be deemed unexcused without a certified doctor’s statement

indicating that the student was seen by the doctor and unable to attend school. After the tenth (10) regular medical excuse note (doctor’s note), the parent/guardian must have a Medical Excuse Form completed by the physician. Students with a chronic/critical condition, as determined by a qualified professional, will be addressed on an individual basis. (Note: 1 doctor’s note that covers 3 days will equal 3 doctor’s notes to cover 3 attendance events). Students and parents are responsible for all notes which are due upon return to school.

Good News About MAP Scores
Good news! Our Fall MAP scores have come in, and I am very pleased to report that at every grade and in every tested subject, Piner students averaged above the 50th percentile-meaning that on the average, our students are performing on at least grade level.  This is a tribute to all the hard work our students, teachers, and families are doing to help insure student success!  Please continue to work together with us to make sure that each of our students is able to reach his or her potential. Is someone available to listen to your child read for 10-15 minutes, to review weekly spelling words, and to practice math facts every evening? These little things will really help your student to improve academically and set him or her on the path to future success.

A Note About Attendance

For the past two months, Piner’s attendance average has been below 95%, which is far below normal. While we have had quite a lot of illness among our students, please help us improve student attendance by only keeping your child home if he or she is truly ill.  Students fall behind academically when they miss too much school. Remember that students may only use 9 parent notes per school year. Be sure to get a doctor’s note if you take your child to the physician. We appreciate your help with this!

We will test our students on the mastery of this content during the last two weeks of school on the new K-PREP test (which replaces the KCCT.) In order to continue making academic progress as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act, 87% of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students must score Proficient or Distinguished in Reading, and 81% must score Proficient or Distinguished in Math. You can help your child to achieve academic success by making sure he or she reads every day, practices math facts, and keeps up with his or her homework.

This means that we have won a mobile wireless tablet computer lab, an interactive whiteboard with a projector and document camera, a student response system, a digital camera, two wireless access points, and a printer, as well as a $5000 professional development package. The total value of our prize is approximately $50,000. Piner was chosen from over 700,000 entries as a Grand Prize winner, and it is due to Secretary Trina Mardis’ persistence that we had so many entries. This will definitely help our students as we move into the realm of 21st Century Learning!

Find a Book Kentucky Summer Reading Program
Jane Beshear, First Lady of Kentucky, joins with The Kentucky Department of Education in supporting the Kentucky Public Libraries’ Summer Reading Programs. This year’s theme is “One World, Many Stories.”  Teachers and parents are encouraged to help children use “Find a Book, Kentucky” (http://kentucky.lexile.com) to build personal reading lists for summer reading and then locate their selections at their school library, local public library, or bookstore. “Find a Book, Kentucky” uses the widely-adopted Lexile® measure to match a reader with books that will provide the right level of challenge to support reading growth. Librarians at the state’s public and school libraries are ready to assist children and their parents as they make summer reading selections.

For more information about specific activities, contests, and reading events for the Summer Reading Program in your county, contact your local public library (http://kdla.ky.gov/librarians/Pages/LibraryDirectory.aspx).

Gym shoes are the safest choice for our students. Thank you for your help with this.
