Please know that the safety of our students, staff, and families is always our number one priority in everything we do, including when making decisions about school closure or delays due to inclement weather and emergency situations such as utility outages. These decisions are made with great care while always erring on the side of caution. We understand these decisions can be disruptive as families have to adjust schedules, students miss out on important learning time, and our staff must adapt quickly. However, these are not decisions we take lightly when considering there are approximately 10,000 students out of a total student population of nearly 14,000 who ride one of our 86 daily bus routes, there are hundreds of student drivers who drive to our various campuses, and there are nearly 2,000 employees who drive to one of our 17 school campuses or other District facilities each and every day. The information below details the decision making process for school closures and delays.
Student education is maximized in the KCSD when students are in school receiving a world-class education. Every effort is made on inclement weather days and emergency situations to reduce the time students are out of the classroom. By having a detailed plan on how to best address the unpredictable nature of inclement weather, we increase the chance of keeping students in the classroom.
We understand the challenge families face when school schedules change unexpectedly and with short notice. This is why the decision process to safely hold school on inclement weather days has been thoroughly reviewed and updated accordingly. We are confident our plan places an emphasis on safety while minimizing the number of closed or delayed days. We truly appreciate your support and understanding when it becomes necessary to implement our inclement weather plan.
Non-traditional Instruction Participation Plan
General Information
The District will begin utilizing NTI days on the 6th instructional day missed due to closure for safety or health reasons.
Teacher Responsibilities
Staff will be available and serve as instructional facilitators via technology and to collaborate with coworkers during the work day. (via LMS: ie. Schoology, Google Meet, email, phone, etc. to assist students/parents as needed during the work day) Contact information should be provided in advance of NTI days to parents/students for assistance with content and navigating assigned work.
The instruction for these unforeseen circumstances should align to grade level/content standards focused on skills already taught while keeping rigor at a manageable level to students approaching their work with possibly limited guidance.
NTI days are considered teacher workdays and count towards fulfilling the number of workdays required by contract. As such, teachers are required to work on NTI days. If a teacher decides not to work, or is unable to work on an NTI day, leave time must be used according to district policies. Teachers on pre-arranged leave are not required to work on NTI days. Teachers should clock in Frontline for time and attendance.
Special Populations
EL students will receive materials developed collaboratively with EL teachers to meet their learning needs.
Special education teachers should collaborate with regular classroom teachers to ensure students with disabilities receive necessary and appropriate services and accommodations on assignments during NTI days.
Participation Tracking Procedures
Student participation will be based on interaction with a teacher either by a completed work product, phone, email, or other virtual meeting via technology platform on any NTI day. Students will have seven calendar days to complete work from NTI days. Within 14 calendar days, teachers will review the work completed by each student and report participation to the Principal to determine school wide participation counts and percentages. Student participation is reconciled at the teacher level, then the building level.
*If a student participates in any class the student is considered to have participated for that NTI Day.
